What is Vocations Sunday?
Vocations Sunday is a gentle invitation to pause and listen for God’s voice. We believe that God calls each and every one of us, and that deep peace, contentment, and joy are found in responding to that call.
The word vocation can sometimes feel reserved for a select few, perhaps those in ordained ministry, wearing a clerical collar. But Vocations Sunday reminds us that God’s call is not limited to “special” people or even particular roles.
It is personal.
God speaks to you.
God calls you.
In the Church of England, vocation takes many forms. It may be a call to ordained ministry as a priest or deacon. It may be a call to Licensed Lay Ministry, serving as a churchwarden, supporting a church school as a governor, or serving faithfully in countless other ways within parish life and beyond.
Every calling matters. Every “yes” makes a difference.
Listening to God’s call shapes and transforms us. When we dare to step into what God is inviting us to be and to do, we are changed. Sometimes that step requires courage. We may doubt our ability or question whether we are capable enough. Yet God does not call us because we are already perfectly equipped; God calls us because we are willing. We are not defined by what we achieve, but by our openness and obedience to his voice.
And we are never alone. God promises the gift of his Holy Spirit; to guide us, to strengthen us, and to give us confidence for the path ahead.
